To support our mission of providing quality dental care and education to children at an affordable cost to their families, KidSMILES has two main programs—the pediatric dental clinic and educational outreach.
KidSMILES Pediatric Dental Clinic
The cornerstone of KidSMILES’ efforts is a unique pediatric dental clinic at 770 Bethel Road in Columbus, Ohio. Run entirely by volunteer dental professionals, the clinic provides comprehensive dental care to children for a cost of only $10 per visit. Services include:
- Dental examinations
- Fluoride treatments
- Cavity removal and restoration
- Endodontic treatment
- Space maintenance
- Harmful habit correction
- Minor periodontal surgery
- Management of impacted teeth
The clinic is easily accessible off of 315 and on the COTA bus route and serves children whose families earn less than 250% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Educational Outreach Program
In December 2010, KidSMILES and the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation joined together to implement an educational outreach program for central Ohio schools. Since then, Stinger has accompanied volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental assistants from KidSMILES to elementary schools in at-risk areas, reaching thousands of children.
During each school visit, volunteers explain the benefits of good dental health and proper nutrition to the students. Goody bags are left for teachers to hand out to each student at the end of the school day and include toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and information sheets for parents. If you would like KidSMILES to visit your school, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dental Health Stats
- Dental care is the number one unmet health care need for children in Ohio.
- More than 12% of Franklin County children have never visited a dentist.
- More than 13,000 children could not receive dental care when needed in 2010.
